Work set to start on the Hollinwood Junction
£35 million plans to deliver 30-acres of employment space, community leisure and housing in Hollinwood have moved a step closer with work to dismantle a redundant gasholder on the site set to begin.
The Hollinwood Junction development, which is being delivered by a partnership between Langtree and Oldham Council, is set to create 760 new jobs in total.
The site benefits from excellent transport links (road and tram), which create an opportunity to establish a regionally-important employment destination at a key gateway site into Oldham.
This week National Grid has written to local residents and businesses to make them aware of the start of works to dismantle the 100-year-old redundant gasholder. Work on dismantling the holder will be undertaken by specialist contractor Erith and is expected to be completed early in the New Year.
Its removal will free up further land for development which will contribute to the creation of 150,000 square feet of high quality business and employment space.
Councillor Sean Fielding, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “This is a really significant milestone in delivering what will be a remarkable asset for Oldham.
“This development underpins our ambition for Oldham. We want to create a credible alternative business location to Manchester City Centre, based upon better value and direct regional transport links.”
Neal Biddle, Group Development Director at Langtree, said: “Our partnership is delivering the regeneration we promised and it’s good to be stepping up another gear. We’re now looking forward to announcing future phases and occupiers later in the year.”
As part of the Hollinwood Junction project, Euro Garages has already begun work to build a £2 million petrol filling station on the old Roxy Cinema site which will include a convenience store and bakery, creating 30 jobs.
When fully developed the 30-acre Hollinwood Junction site will be home to employment space, community leisure and retail, up to 150 family homes and 760 new jobs.
