All change for Oldham’s oldest theatre company

New seats at the Lyceum

New seats at the Lyceum

Lyceum Theatre Oldham has been a feature of the town centre for nearly ninety years, and in its current basement location in the Lyceum building since 1938.

This summer, following years of saving and cutting costs, they are undergoing a full auditorium refurbishment, with new seating and colour scheme.

It’s a busy time for local amateur dramatics group Lyceum Theatre Oldham. The week after finishing their 2014/15 season with an almost sell-out production, they ripped out the old seats of the intimate, 100-seat auditorium to make way for a more comfortable experience for the audience, who travel from all around the area to see their classic, professional-quality shows.

The theatre, on Union Street, in the heart of Oldham, has been a fixture of the town for nearly 90 years. The refurbishment is the culmination of years of hard work for the management team and many volunteers who support the theatre in their spare time.

The Chair of the Management Team, Mark Higginbottom says: “We decided several years ago that we needed new seating. We are delighted that this year we have reached a point where we can cover the expenditure of the new seating as part of a complete overhaul of the auditorium.”

Like many amateur theatre companies, the changes are only possible because of the hard work of local, dedicated volunteers. As well as the actors giving up their time for free, it is the work of volunteers working backstage, front of house, cleaning, marketing and managing that mean the show can go on.

Lyceum Theatre Oldham is looking for new volunteers in all areas. Anyone interested should contact lyceumtheatreoldham@gmail.com
