Staff and pupils of Bright Futures School in Grasscroft held an open afternoon at the school on the last day of the Christmas term.
Pupils served refreshments and showed visitors around the school including Debbie Abrahams MP and the mayor of Oldham, councillor Derek Heffernan.
The School specialises in working with children with autism and has recently been given a GOOD judgement following an OFSTED inspection. It opened in 2010, now has 9 pupils aged between 5 and 17 years old.
Some of the key highlights from the full Ofsted report include pupils enjoying coming to school and having excellent relationships with the adults who work with them, pupils are also well cared for and supported exceptionally well. As a result many who start the school with very challenging behaviour improve significantly over time and staff very quickly help pupils to overcome their negative attitudes to formal education.
Other highlights include the staff morale which is high, staff are successful in turning around pupils’ entrenched negative attitudes and instill a love of learning and a positive attitude which helps pupils achieve academic success.
The school’s systematic approach to addressing pupils’ social communication needs ensures that all pupils from their different starting points quickly acquire the skills and confidence that they need to be successful students. They pay heed to pupils’ interests and plan activities which have meaningful links to everyday life. As a result of this approach pupils look forward to their lessons and staff relationships with pupils are exceptional.
The school told Saddleworth news: “We are extremely happy that the report has acknowledged all the hard work put into the school by staff and pupils over the past few years and are pleased to be moving the school forward in its next phase which is to develop post 16 provision and links with the community.”
