Carnage on stage as Oldham theatre opens its 2016/17 season

Lyceum Theatre Oldham opens its new season with Yasmina Reza’s razor-sharp wit in THE GOD OF CARNAGE.

Reza’s plays start with a simple idea and this one is no exception. Set in a middle class district of Paris, THE GOD OF CARNAGE tells the civilised story of two well-to-do couples meeting to discuss a playground fight between their young sons. As the evening draws on, one father wants to get away to deal with a crisis at work while one mother is more concerned about her pudding and her coffee table books than her child’s behaviour. The evening descends into hilarious chaos, making us reflect on our own values while laughing at the characters on stage.

As the first show in the new season, this satirical play deals with social hypocrisies and tackles big issues with humour that keeps audiences gripped. When Reza wrote the play in 2008, she is quoted as saying “There’s no point in writing theatre if it’s not accessible.”

Lyceum Theatre Oldham achieved unprecedented success last season, with all its shows selling out, often before the production even opened. Many more people are enjoying the new seating and special atmosphere of this wonderful basement theatre in the centre of Oldham. The company launched its 2016/17 Season in July with record season ticket sales. Public booking for THE GOD OF CARNAGE opens on Monday 15 August.
