Councillor criticises Transport for Greater Manchester over lack of action on bus stop issue

No shelter - the new site of the bus stop

Garth Harkness, Liberal Democrat councillor for Saddleworth North, has criticised Transport for Greater Manchester for the handling of the placement of a bus stop in Dobcross.

The former site when the stop had a shelter

He contacted TfGM five months ago when the bus stop, and shelter, was moved from its original position next to the builders site because of safety fears as it was felt it was too close to a bend.

The bus stops present position means that no shelter can be accommodated as it was incorrectly positioned five months ago on the footpath next to the red brick industrial building used by Durr furniture.

Cllr Harkness told Saddleworth News: “This site is completely inadequate, the old position was set back – but where it is now is far too narrow – it is in quite a vulnerable position. People can’t wait for buses and use the footpath at the same time because people cannot step back anywhere.

“As a school governor I know that mothers with prams sometimes have to walk in the road. This is not acceptable and Transport for Greater Manchester has already acknowledged that it was placed in this position by error.”

A further consultation took place and the bus stop was proposed to be placed further up the road past the building.

Harkness added: “I am very disappointed with the whole process and the lack of updates from Transport for Greater Manchester. It seems quite straightforward, a site was found and as it was placed in the wrong position, and now it needs moving to where it is supposed to go.

“It should not take so long for this to happen and I can’t understand why what seems a simple error cannot be rectified quickly – the one across the road has been done but this one has not – I hope we can get a resolution soon.

“It seems to be half falling down when I passed it today so maybe divine intervention is what we have to rely on.”
