Cruel Thief Targets Uppermill Pensioner
A 90-year-old woman has been robbed in a distraction burglary at her home in Uppermill. The thief made off with cash and a debit card.
According to police, the incident happened yesterday afternoon at about 2 o’clock. The woman answered her door to a man who said he was from the water board and had “qualifications.”
The man went into the kitchen and checked the washing machine before going upstairs to the bathroom. After he left, the woman discovered the man had made off with between £600 and £700, as well as her debit card.
The thief is described as white, about 6’1” and good-looking, with thick black hair and wearing a dark suit.
The police are asking people throughout Saddleworth to keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours. Anyone with information can contact officers in Uppermill on 0161 856 8990.
It’s not known if the crime is linked to a recent series of similar incidents across Greater Manchester, in which thieves have used being from “the water board” as a cover story to trick their way into homes. An article from Saddleworth News about that can be viewed here.
