Date Set For Uppermill Parking Public Meeting

The public meeting about parking issues in Uppermill will be held a fortnight tomorrow, on Tuesday 26 July. It’ll take place at Uppermill Civic Hall with a 7:30pm start.

Parish councillors agreed last month to hold the meeting, so residents, business owners and other interested folk can air their views about the impact on the village of the parking restrictions introduced earlier this year.

Time limits of two and three hours were brought in on most Uppermill car parks in February, in an attempt to prevent some drivers from hogging spaces for days at a time, and to increase the turnover of shoppers and tourists visiting the village.

But during a lively debate at last month’s Parish Council meeting, attended by more than 20 members of the public, councillors were told that residential streets in Uppermill were now being effectively used as car parks, with residents unable to get near their own homes.

People living on Lee Street say the problem is particularly bad there. They’re also angry at a survey carried out by Oldham Council earlier this year into whether there should be parking permits for residents, because Lee Street was not among the three roads in central Uppermill which voted in favour. They say there’s 95% support on Left Lee Street for such a system.

The operation of the time limits is due to be reviewed by Oldham Council in September. Following a suggestion from the four Independent councillors, the Parish Council agreed to hold a public meeting so the various views could be discussed more widely ahead of that review.

Members of the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership, including the local borough councillors, will be invited, along with the relevant member of Oldham Council’s Cabinet, Cllr Dave Hibbert.
