Earthquake Felt In Saddleworth

An earthquake was felt by residents in Saddleworth tonight. The ground shook briefly just after 9 o’clock, and people in Uppermill, Greenfield and Dobcross were among those who noticed it.

The British Geological Survey later confirmed that an earthquake had taken place. Sky News reported that it measured 3.6 on the Richter scale, with the epicentre near Ripon in North Yorkshire.

Local folk quickly shared their experiences on Twitter. Darren Hargreaves said he felt the quake while watching TV with his wife in Dobcross, adding that it “felt like a shudder.”

There were also reports of the quake from Uppermill, Greenfield and Mossley. It was stronger over in the Calder Valley, and one resident of Triangle tweeted Saddleworth News to say “it fair rocked away” where she was. However, people in Shaw and Holmfirth were among those who didn’t feel a thing.

I have been studying the co-incidence of eclipses and earthquakes and it must be noted that early this morning there was a partial eclipse of the sun.During an eclipse the gravitational forces upon the earth are greatest as the sun, earth and the moon are more or less in a sraight line.
