First Day At Work For Debbie Abrahams

Debbie Abrahams MP at the Ram's Head in Denshaw on Friday.

Our new MP, Debbie Abrahams, has been spending her first day at Westminster since her victory in Thursday’s by-election. She’s expected to formally swear in tomorrow, which will allow her to make her maiden speech in the House of Commons and take part in parliamentary business.

She was met today by Labour leader Ed Miliband, and in a brief part of the meeting which was open to the media, she re-stated one of the key themes which were a feature of the by-election campaign. Mrs Abrahams told him that voters “really did feel very disillusioned” with promises made by the coalition parties before the general election then not kept.

In a later interview with Granada, she added that she couldn’t quite describe how excited she was to be at Westminster, adding that she couldn’t wait to get started as an MP. You can see the video report by Granada’s Claire Ashforth here, and you can follow Claire on Twitter here.

On Friday, Mrs Abrahams told Saddleworth News that battling public sector cutbacks would be her main priority in the coming weeks and months: “I think it’s very important that we’re protecting our public services which are under huge threat. This is one of the reasons I think, in terms of the broken promises, why we had such a good response.”

She went on: “The electorate wanted to send a very clear message to this government, so obviously (I’ll be) fighting against the unwarranted cuts that are being announced. Making sure for example that on police, I’ll fight very strongly against the 1,400 police being axed as well as police stations being closed.”

Mrs Abrahams continued: “Making sure that our young people have appropriate facilities, but also opportunities in education and training and employment, that are being kicked away at the moment. So I’ll fight very hard for them.”

I still don’t know what Abrahams would cut in the government finances (apart from employers’ National Insurance) although she seems quite clear on what she would not cut.

I suggest that she (and anyone, especially Labour supporters, interested in the truth about the national debt) Goggles “UK National Debt Clock” and has a good read.

There we go again with the ‘sending a message to government’ line. Does our new MP really believe that the voters in Oldham were so shallow that they wasted their vote in order to ‘send a message’. If thats really true then the person elected is an irrelevance? You can’t have it both ways.

unfortunately, she’s probably right in many cases. I’m not quite sure why people would vote to make a point on a national basis when all we were voting for is our local MP, but there you go…common sense doesn’t always win out.
