Holocaust Memorial Day 2021

The Saddleworth Peace Group (SPG) have announced their plans for the commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD), this Wednesday 27th January. In order for everyone to be safe, their marking of the liberation of Auschwitz will be virtual, but will still include various options for the public to partake in.

Firstly, in accordance with the HMD Trust’s theme for 2021, “Be The Light In The Darkness”, the SPG has designed a poster available to be printed off (please see the end of this article), and asks that these are displayed in windows together with a lit candle or lamp from 8pm on the 27th.  To help develop a sense of community at this time, they suggest photographing your display to upload to their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/332970787439001), using the hashtags: #HolocaustMemorialDay #LightTheDarkness. They are also happy for people to email their photos to saddleworthpg@yahoo.co.uk for the SPG to upload.

The group has also arranged for their HMD banner to be displayed outside Uppermill Methodist Church on the 27th. Similarly to the poster, they suggest taking photographs by the banner (in a Covid-safe way), to share to their Facebook page.

At 7pm on 27th, the HMD Trust will be holding their first fully virtual ceremony. The SPG would like to promote this event, which you can register to watch for free, following this link: www.hmd.org.uk/take-part-in-holocaust-memorial-day/

Finally, another virtual HMD service available to watch is the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s, which is at 10am, also on 27th. The link to follow for this is: www.facebook.com/MayorOfGM?mc_cid=16b5c85109&mc_eid=5df65e6db8

A member of the SPG said that, despite limitations this year, “we must not let the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz go unmarked” and expressed his hope that “you will be able to take part in some or all of these virtual events in these strange times”.

On behalf of Saddleworth Life, may I express many thanks to the SPG for their meaningful work, and for ensuring that this important anniversary continues to be recognised.
