Eighties singer and songwriter Lloyd Cole is to play a concert in Uppermill this month in the very same building his mother and father first met almost sixty years ago. The Civic Hall on Lee Street was then called the Mechanics Institute.

Lloyd who was lead singer of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions from 1984 to 1989 was born in Buxton and grew up in nearby Chapel-en-le-Frith and attended New Mills Grammar School, he studied a year of Law at University College London but switched to the University of Glasgow where he studied philosophy and English and met the other members of The Commotions. He went on to have a hugely successful career in the music industry and has earned a reputation as one of the most influential artists of his time.

Lloyd’s father, Brian Cole, contacted Saddleworth News and said: “Almost 60 years ago, having recently moved to the area, I was attending one of the frequent Saturday night dances in the ‘Mechanics Institute’ in Uppermill and whilst looking down from the balcony onto the dance floor I caught sight of the girl who would become my wife.

“Her name was Brenda Wheeldon, and she had lived in Greenfield all her life and attended Saddleworth school before starting work at Robert Fletcher’s in Greenfield. She had also been an active member of the St John Ambulance Brigade.

“A little less than five years later, after I had completed my national service, we married in Friezland church (where we had both been members of the choir) and within a year, our first child was born. We christened him Lloyd and by a ‘strange quirk of fate’ he will be appearing in that very same building in Uppermill, which is now known as the Civic Hall.”

The Lloyd Cole concert is on Tuesday, 26 August, 2014 from 7:45 pm – 11:00 pm at Uppermill Civic Hall, Lee Street, Uppermill, Saddleworth, OL3 6AE.
