Dr Mona el-Farra – family members killed

The co-ordinator in Gaza for a local charity that raises money to help Palestinian women access further education has suffered the dreadful loss of 11 family members killed by Israeli shelling in the Gaza Strip. Five of the family members were children, the youngest being 4 years old.

A spokesperson for the Saddleworth Palestine Women’s Scholarship Fund (SPWSF), Kathy Brooks, said, “We are deeply saddened and appalled by the deaths of Dr Mona El Farra’s family members. Dr Mona has worked tirelessly for justice for Palestinians and she is a key worker in ensuring the success of the Scholarship Fund. I cannot begin to imagine the devastating grief she must be feeling.

In a further worrying development it has been reported that one of the universities attended by scholarship students has been badly damaged by Israeli bombs. Kathy Brooks said: “We are worried about the students we fund. We have no news about what has happened to them, but it is inconceivable that they have not been affected by the war. We can only hope that they have not been killed.”

The SPWSF is currently involved in funding over 25 women in further education in Gaza and is determined to continue raising money to help Gazan women, a task the group feels to be even more important as a result of the devastation Gaza and its people are suffering.

Israel says it is acting in self defence to protect its citizens after rockets have been fired across the border into its towns and villages, a number of Israeli soldiers and civilians have also been killed in the on going fighting. Despite many ceasefire announcements by both sides the fighting continues.
