Local School Laughing For Africa!

School trips to developing countries have become increasingly popular in recent years.  Participating students get to to see how the rest of the world lives as well as working through various tasks and projects such as well digging, classroom building or teaching English.  Stalybridge’s West Hill school are sending some of their pupils on a month long trip to Tanzania but the first hurdle they face is how to pay for the air fares?

A quick chat with Greenfield’s Off The Rails Comedy Club later and a fundraising plan was hatched….

Saturday 6th October hosts two comedians whose careers seem to be in reverse as both started off working in television before embarking on stand up careers! Jimmy McGhie was an assistant producer for the BBC before picking up a mic. Described as “a brilliant talent” by The Scotsman he regularly returns to the Beeb but now to warm up for The Graham Norton Show. In true mercenary fashion he also sells exactly the same service to ITV’s Loose Women. And Channel 4’s Deal or No Deal.

It was working with studio warm up comedians on Channel 4’s Welsh language cousin –  S4C – that tempted former floor manager Tudur Owen into cracking gags for a living. Anglesey’s funniest man has since won a BAFTA, starred in a sitcom and recently appeared on Radio 4’s The Now Show. His short set went down so well he was commissioned to write and perform ‘Putting Anglesey On The Map’ which is due to be aired later this year.

London’s Gabriel Ebulue and Rob Riley round off the bill at the Royal George in Greenfield. Ticket details
