Mitali Reassures Customers After Food Hygiene Inspection

Bosses at the Mitali restaurant and takeaway in Uppermill have said customers have nothing to worry about, after the Indian eaterie suffered a bad report by food standards inspectors.

Officials from Oldham Council’s Environmental Services department gave Mitali zero out of five following a visit in June, meaning the restaurant needed to improve urgently.

The Mitali was among 80 zero-rated establishments across Greater Manchester to be named in an article by the Manchester Evening News today, which can be found here.

However, speaking to Saddleworth News, Rina Begun from the Mitali said the problems found by the inspector were a one-off, and that steps had already been taken to improve standards.

She said: “One thing that happened was that the inspector thought one member of staff hadn’t washed his hands, but he says he did. Things just crept up on that day, but normally it’s not like that.”

Rina, who is the wife of the restaurant’s owner, added that the inspector had already made a return visit. She said: “He agreed that it was better than what he had found on that day.”

She said the team at the Mitali have also been in contact with hygiene officials about making improvements, and revealed they are expecting a new full inspection any day now, which should see them given a new, higher rating.

Rina said: “I can say that everything’s fine in the kitchen today. The business is still going well, it’s still the same as it was before. Our customers are still coming back.”

The Mitali, which is on Uppermill High Street, is known to be a favourite of Saddleworth’s own TV astronomer Professor Brian Cox, who has tweeted about using the takeaway in the past.
