The new manager of the Tesco supermarket in Greenfield has asked for local people to contact him directly with their thoughts about the store.

Bill Davidson can be e-mailed at this address: bill.davidson@uk.tesco.com

Bill has taken over from Anna Wisniowski, who overshaw the opening of the supermarket in December. She’s now been promoted to another job elsewhere in Tesco.

The store has divided opinion in Saddleworth, with some local people welcoming the convenience of a larger local supermarket, but others concenred about the impact on our village centres.

Julie’s Sweet Shop in Greenfield has already shut, citing the new Tesco as one of the factors which contributed to its closure.

According to Tesco, Bill has worked for the company for 27 years, and was most recently at its Cleckheaton store.

In a statement, he commented: “I want to hear from people about anything on their minds. It might be products they think we should stock which we might not currently, any local organisations with whom we should be involved and any ways of ensuring we listen properly to our customers in Greenfield and Saddleworth.”

That e-mail address again is: bill.davidson@uk.tesco.com

Supermarkets always bring more road congestion locally. Since Tescos opened it has been difficult at certain times of day to negotiate Carr Lane due to shoppers using it as a short cut. I know Chapel road is closed one way at the moment but I feel Carr lane will continue to be a headache. Hopefully the parking restrictions in Uppermill will encourage people to use local outlets more often again.

The signage is like a beacon. I was flying over saddleworth at night recently as the plane was approaching Manchester airport and I could have sworn the airtraffic controller told the pilot to turn left at saddleroth Tesco.

Tesco is renouned for its bullying tactics against councils and suppliers alike. I believe suppliers have to pay Tesco if they want their product at eye level. To quote a supplier: ‘Tescos have the morals of a sewer rat’

I apologise if this seems to be turning into a bit of a rant but: Every little bit helps Tesco but nobody else really!

Matti: Oh come on, don’t blame Tesco for everything. The only thing causing the present road congestion is the Chapel Road closure and its ludicrous one way system which is in the wrong direction. If reversed you would see a massive decrease in congestion – but it won’t happen because the highway muppets at Oldham Council will never admit to a mistake.

Why can’t we turn the lights off at night. In these days of reducing our environmental impact and reducing our carbon footprint I’m sure a small gesture of turning the lights off on the store and on the car park at night after closing time would be a small contribution. I just can’t see a reason why they have to stay on. And as for that neon Tesco sign it ruins the whole appearance of the valley. Use to love the view coming home from work along top Mossley but now all you see is that wretched sign. So much for progress.

Please please please, a petrol station. No one would have their business damaged, and it would be providing a real service for the community in this area.
