Council Candidate Statement: Sean Fielding (Labour, Saddleworth North)

Labour’s Sean Fielding, who is hoping to be elected to represent Saddleworth North on Oldham Council, said he would aim to be a “local champion” for the area if he wins next Thursday.

He also used his opening statement to the audience at last week’s candidates’ debate in Dobcross to suggest that having a Labour councillor would be an advantage for the area, in the event the party regains political control at the Civic Centre.

Mr Fielding said: “I’ve picked up that many people are dissatisfied with the level and quality of service that they have received from Oldham Council, and this is despite three years of Liberal Democrat control.”

He continued: “Since I was chosen for this seat, I’ve spent almost every spare hour of my life up here, leafleting, canvassing, door-knocking, and getting to know the local area.”

Mr Fielding, an engineering student who also works part-time at a supermarket, added: “If you were to elect me as your councillor, it would put Saddleworth in a very fortunate position.”

He continued: “There is a strong chance that Labour could take control of the council at this election. If Saddleworth were to have a person who is keen to speak up on local issues, and is a member of the controlling group on the council, then it would ensure that Saddleworth would no longer be an afterthought at the Civic Centre.”

You can listen to Mr Fielding’s opening statement in full here. I’ve also carried out a separate interview with him, which can be read here.

The debate took place at The Swan in Dobcross last Thursday, and a Saddleworth News article about it can be read here.

The Saddleworth North ward covers Dobcross, Diggle, Delph, Denshaw, Scouthead and Austerlands. There are three other candidates, and you can hear from Liberal Democrat Derek Heffernan here, Independent candidate Ken Hulme here and Phil Sewell of the Conservatives here.

Polling day is 5 May. For full Saddleworth News coverage of the Saddleworth Parish Council election go here, and articles about the Oldham Council election are here.
