Newly-elected chief of Saddleworth Round Table pledges to boost membership in recruitment drive

The newly-elected chief of Saddleworth Round Table has pledged to launch a recruitment drive to boost membership.

Matthew Sykes, at 32 the club’s youngest chairman, is a former pupil at Hulme Grammar School, and has an executive role in the food sales industry.

Austerlands-born Mr Sykes, whose mother Joan is chair of Scouthead and Austerlands Community Group, joined Round Table more than two years ago.

At the club’s AGM at their headquarters in the White Hart at Lydgate, Mr Sykes told members: “I am planning an orchestrated drive to encourage more young, local businessmen to join Round Table this year.

“It is a tremendous club based on friendship and a genuine willingness support local good causes.

“We can really be proud if the stalwart efforts by our current loyal members but I am very hopeful we can encourage more new ones to join and celebrate and share our efforts and achievements.”

And he praised outgoing chair, Ian Eardley, pictured, saying: “Ian has done a terrific job over the last year and I intend to continue his upward mission of promoting the club to our local and wider communities.”

Outgoing chairman Mr Eardley said: “We staged very successful events during my year including Sadd Fest 13 and last month’s Beer Festival which funded the hugely popular Winter Wonderland in Uppermill and our old folks Christmas party, which both had record attendances.”

Wishing Mr Sykes a successful upcoming year, Mr Eardley added: “On behalf of  Saddleworth Round Table, I would like to thank all the volunteers, local clubs and Community groups who continue to offer us their unstinting support.”

Other officers elected were: Kristian Richmond – vice chair, Dave Wood – secretary, Richard Heyes – treasurer.
