Oldham bucks the national trend with best ever GCSE results

Oldham’s young people continue to shine and have produced the Borough’s best-ever GCSE results.

Early indications* suggest more than half of all local schools have improved or maintained their results despite a predicted national drop of pupils getting five top grade A* to C passes.

The percentage of pupils in our schools gaining a least five GCSEs – including English and mathematics – at C or above is expected to have slightly risen from last year’s 55.9 per cent pass rate to above 56 per cent – against an expected overall fall across schools in England.

We also expect the percentage of pupils gaining at least five GCSEs is yet again to be above the national average.

The proportion of GCSEs awarded at least a C grade has fallen nationally for the second year running, official figures from the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) have revealed.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, said: “Early indications show that results in the Borough have bucked the national trend, which is great news.

“I congratulate all the young people for their achievements and wish them all the luck for the future, but it’s also important to highlight the support of their parents, teachers, tutors and school support staff.

“We will continue to maintain high expectations for our young people and support our schools to achieve high standards.

“I also encourage all those young people to think carefully about the opportunities of either carrying on into further education, vocational training or seeking employment.

“Such opportunities will increase through Oldham Council’s Get Oldham Working campaign and provide even greater prospects for young people, which strives to create 2,015 work-related opportunities by 2015.”

*The Department for Education will confirm national figures this Autumn.
