One of the Liberal Democrats hoping to be elected as a parish councillor for Uppermill has promised to be a “grass-roots councillor with local knowledge” if she’s successful next week.

Lesley Schofield, who has lived in the village throughout her life, added that she wanted the “tight-knit community” of Uppermill to be “not only protected but promoted.”

In a written statement, she commented: “Too often Oldham Council has made planning decisions which have been too lenient on developers, taking little account of what the people of Uppermill and Saddleworth really want.”

She added: “I am therefore determined to see a strong, united Parish Council, and ensure that higher standards of design are met, particularly in conservation areas.”

Ms Schofield also said: “More immediately, I want to see the old police station on Buckley Street returned to a state of repair. This building is, unfortunately, a sad example of the scant regard developers have for the local community.”

Ms Schofield continued: “Aside from the built landscape, the character of Uppermill relies on local societies, charities and businesses thriving. I am keen to see a dialogue opened up with local businesses so that the Parish Council can do its bit to help in these difficult economic times.”

Her statement went on: “It is also vital that local voluntary groups are recognised and supported. They organise lectures, concerts and events which hugely enrich village life.”

She concluded: “If elected I will be a grass-roots councillor with local knowledge who always puts the interests of Uppermill and Saddleworth first.”

Five candidates are standing for two seats in the Uppermill ward. An interview with Conservative Pam Byrne is here, and you can hear from Independent Nick Watts here. The other contenders are Lib Dem Alma McInnes, and Conservative Graham Sheldon.

Polling day is a week on Thursday, that’s 5 May. I’m aiming to interview as many candidates as possible, but sometimes I’m carrying written statements for the sake of convenience.
