Pictures From Standedge Tunnel Festival

Here are some of the photos taken so far during the celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the official opening of the Standedge Canal Tunnel. They’ve been collected by the folks at the Standedge Visitor Centre, using image hosting website Photobucket.

A variety of events have taken place over the weekend, including guided walks, and the legging of boats through the tunnel between Diggle and Marsden in the traditional style, with some of those involved raising money for charity.

The festival continues on Monday, which is 200 years to the day since the formal opening of the tunnel in 1811. Monday is also the 30th anniversary since work to remove concrete caps from locks along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal began in 1981. The canal, which initially shut in 1944, has been navigable along its full length again since 2001.
