Pictures From Sunday At The Rushcart Festival

Here are some excellent pictures of Sunday’s action at last weekend’s Saddleworth Rushcart. They’ve been sent in to Saddleworth News by Andrew Schofield of the Northwest Sports Online Photographic Agency, and are reproduced here with his permission.

On Sunday morning, the morris men moved the rushcart from Uppermill up to St Chad’s, where the traditional rushbearing took place. The ceremony involves the placing of the rushes on the church floor, to act as insulation for the winter.

Later, other traditions, including the wrestling and gurning competitions, were held outside the Church Inn, as morris men and spectators alike enjoyed an afternoon of fun. Morris man Dave Holland was once again the wrestling champion, the 16th time he’s taken the prize.

More details about Andrew Schofield and his work are available at the NWSO website here.
