The UCAN group have been busy completing the task of removing the wet and slippery leaves along the towpath from Wade Lock to the viaduct.

One last snowy bulb planting session took place following the kind donation of a batch of bluebell bulbs. The team are really hoping for a colourful show in spring as over 1000 bulbs have now been planted. Plans for the new year are underway and include further work on the woodland area near the viaduct starting with the removal of weak and fallen saplings. This will open up the area allowing in more daylight and will help to encourage the healthy growth of the woodland floor and the surrounding trees. The year was rounded off by the team celebrating with festive drinks and mince pies.

UCAN told Saddleworth News : “We would like to thank CRT (Canal and River Trust) and Tesco volunteers for their continued support.”

Getting involved in volunteering in the local environment is a great way of meeting other locals, enjoying some healthy exercise & fresh air, with a well earned hot drink and biscuit at the end!

UCAN are always pleased to welcome new members to join them and help make Uppermill an even better place to live. For anyone interested in joining UCAN on future project days our upcoming programme is as follows :-
Jan – Thursday 4th (work off those mince pies!)
Jan – Saturday 20th
Feb – Thursday 1st
Feb – Saturday 17th
All equipment is provided by CRT [Canal & River Trust], and you are recommended to wear stout footwear and suitable clothing for the weather conditions on the day. The usual meeting point is 10am at the canal bridge on Moorgate Street, but this is sometimes changed. New volunteers are advised to check a few days in advance, with the Project Day calendar view-able on our website: ucanuppermill.com/.
