Review Of 2010: February

Over the festive period Saddleworth News is looking back at some of the stories which made the headlines this year.

The sign at the official boundary of Greater Manchester, on the A635 above Greenfield.

February was the month in which this website began, and among the early events Saddleworth News covered was the announcement of Network Rail’s Northern Hub, a £530m shopping list of potential rail improvements which included the prospect of re-opening the disused Standedge Tunnels as well as a station at Diggle.

That led to a cautious welcome from local campaigners, who said it proved their hopes of a new Diggle Station were still on the agenda.

Those articles can be read here and here.

As illustrated by the picture on the left, Oldham Council started putting up new signs at the borough boundaries. But the blue colour scheme and new ‘O’ logo weren’t to everyone’s taste. Article here.

Councillors and police alike were left somewhat embarrassed by the poor turnout at a PACT meeting in Uppermill, as just one person turned up. Soon after the format of the events was changed. The original story can be viewed here.

At the parish council meeting, there was concern over the possible cost of the parish council’s own new logo, as well as its website, while councillors gave the g0-ahead for the beginning of the new community toilets scheme. The stories are here and here.

There was also a bit more snow as reported here, although it wasn’t nearly as serious as the severe weather which hit the area in January.

Meanwhile, the build-up to the general election continued with the news that former Cabinet minister James Purnell would be standing down as MP for Stalybridge and Hyde. You can read more about that here.
