Saddleworth represented at Butlins National Brass Band Championships

Last weekend saw the Annual Butlins National Brass Band Championships at Skegness.

Saddleworth was represented by 4 bands, Uppermill in the 1st Section, Mossley Band in the 2nd Section, Boarshurst Silver Band in the 3rd and Greenfield Band in the 4th Section.

Uppermill finished in 6th place with Greenfield Band finishing 8th in their section.

But the spoils of Victory came to both Mossley and Boarshurst with Mossley winning the 2nd Section for the 3rd time in succession.

The bands Musical Director, Duncan Byers, was extremely please with the results and said: “The band is ‘over the moon’ with their Hat Trick of victories and I’ve have had a grin from ear to ear all weekend!”

The other worthy Champions was the Boarshurst Silver Band lead by Musical Director, David W Ashworth, who won the 3rd Section for the Second time in succession.

Kevin Wadsworth, who was one of the adjudicators, described their performance as Excellent. David stated that their winning performance was a result of commitment and hard work by the entire band.

All bands are now working hard for the Area Contest at Blackpool in March.

I think you will find Mossley is in Tameside! Mossley Band are a local band to Saddleworth i.e. neighbouring, as is Oldham Band Lees (as they are across the county end border and are thus in Oldham). When I write my article about Saddleworth bands in the Saddleworth Independent paper I will refer to the achievements of these bands purely because they are our successful neighbours and people from our district may have connections. Mossley Band would have to move their HQ into Saddleworth to be classed as one of our bands, which I am sure they would never want to and have never been acknowledged as one in the prizes on Whit Friday.

Please ignore the last post, if you are including the local areas. But it would be better to stress that Mossley are not in fact a Saddleworth Band. The bands of saddleworth are proud of that status – the other bands are just neighbours.

I thought the same and I do know Mossley is not in Saddleworth ha ha ! However the story was written and sent in by the bands people themselves who know a lot more than Ido on the subject. I assumed for some brass band reason Mossley may have been supporting the Saddleworth side. I will try and get some clarification on this though.
