This Sunday (16th August) will see the last ever Saddleworth & District Cricket League Tanner Cup final. The reason being The Saddleworth & District League & The Central Lancashire League have agreed to merge and will become the Pennine Cricket League in 2016.

Saddleworth and local rivals Greenfield meet for the first time in the final. Both clubs are founder members of the league and the trophy was first played for in 1925. This makes it even more remarkable they haven’t met in a final previously!

Both clubs are playing some excellent cricket in 2015 with Greenfield currently sat in sixth position in the table and Saddleworth above them in first. In the Whitsuntide double header the spoils were shared with one victory a piece. Greenfield steamrollered Saddleworth on the Friday, bowling the visitors out for 85 to complete a 52 run victory.

However, the following day the boot was on the other foot as Saddleworth demolished the Greenfield batting line up, bowling them out for 93 and sealing a 29 run victory. Both games were low scoring affairs with ball dominating bat. Perhaps a high scoring classic is on the cards for Sunday.

This year’s final also sees both sides fielding a father and son combination. Steven & son James Howard will line up for the home side with captain Chris and father Peter Gill for Greenfield. Keeping the family theme Saddleworth also have two brothers in Peter and David Roberts as well as Michael Ward as Groundsman and son David as scorer.

The family connections go back even further for Greenfield. Chris is actually the third generation of Gills to captain a Tanner Cup final side.

Saddleworth Cricket Club welcomes everyone for what promises to be a mouth watering final between two clubs separated by less than a mile in distance.

Match starts at 1.15pm, admission is £3.00 with concessions £1.00.
