Tree Felling Along Railway Line
Network Rail workers are beginning the task of felling trees at the side of the main line between Diggle and Stalybridge today. The job is expected to last several months, meaning people living close to the line could suffer a bit more noise than usual when the workers are in their area.
In a letter to residents, Network Rail said: “The work has been identified by our operations team for safety reasons due to incidents with our signalling systems associated with leaf fall problems which pose a threat to the safe operation of trains.” In other words, it’s to stop leaves getting on the line.
The letter continued: “It is necessary to remove all broad leaf species such as sycamore, ash and horse chestnut, it is proposed where possible all hawthorn, holly or non-problematic species will be retained.”
Network Rail has promised to keep any nesting birds or protected species safe if its engineers come across them. However, it has warned that chainsaws will be among the noisy items of equipment used.
Anyone with concerns about the work can ring Network Rail’s helpline on 08457 114141.
