Himalayan Balsam – We are now seeing results from the last three years work as the balsam appears well under control in some areas.  The nettles are flourishing in the Viaduct Woodland with hardly any balsam near the canal and there is nowhere near as much in the land near the stepping stones.  We were also pleased to see that at least one of our bird boxes is now in use as blue tits have been seen nesting in the woodland.  We are also hoping that we will be able to construct a pond to further enhance wildlife diversity in the area.

Lock gate painting –  On one of the few sunny days last month UCAN volunteers set about painting Dunge Booth lock gates and, weather permitting, we are hoping to complete this task over the next few weeks.

We are always pleased to welcome new members and for anyone interested in getting involved our upcoming programme is as follows:-

July – Friday 12th

July – Saturday 27th

August – Thursday 8th

August – Thursday 22nd

Getting involved in volunteering in the local environment is a great way of meeting other locals, enjoying some healthy exercise & fresh air, with a well earned hot drink and biscuit at the end!

All equipment is provided by CRT and you are recommended to wear stout footwear and suitable clothing for the weather conditions on the day. The usual meeting point is 10am at the canal bridge on Moorgate Street;  please contact UCAN’s Group Leader Peter Killan on 01457 878361, or e-mail at peterkillan@hotmail.com
