Uppermill Gas Main Works Begin

The roadworks near the Wool Road mini-roundabout.

The work to replace a mile of gas mains under Uppermill High Street has started, near the Wool Road mini-roundabout. Part of the road is down to one lane with temporary traffic lights in operation.

Engineers will be working for the next nine months on the £1m project. The affected area runs from the mini-roundabout, right through the village, to the junction with Chapel Road. The work will be carried out bit by bit so it will be some months before the centre of Uppermill is directly affected.

The National Grid delayed the start of the work by a week from the planned start date of last Monday, to avoid clashing with the school term. Work on the stretch of road near Saddleworth School should be completed during the holidays.

The discussion about the work has been going on for months, with some business owners and councillors expressing concern about the possible impact on trade in Uppermill.

If you’ve got any views on that, or on whether the work is already affecting you, please do leave a comment below this article.

For more information about the Uppermill work in general, see a statement issued by National Grid last month here.

Meanwhile, roadworks have also begun again in Delph, with United Utilities carrying out work on Denshaw Road to upgrade the village’s sewers. The road is due to be completely closed near the school until early September, and for details of amended bus arrangements and other information, take a look at a Saddleworth News story here.
