Uppermill Gas Main Works Delayed By A Week

The work to replace the gas mains under Uppermill High Street, which had been due to begin today, now won’t start until next Monday.

National Grid said the decision was taken following consultation with local bus operators. With the schools due to break up this Friday, it was decided that it would be better to start the work after that, to avoid causing too much congestion, especially with parents doing the school run to Saddleworth School.

Gas mains under a mile of the High Street from the Wool Road mini-roundabout to the Chapel Road junction will be replaced. Engineers will be carrying out the £1 million work bit by bit, with the stretch nearest Wool Road due to be dug up first. During the repairs, the affected parts of the High Street will be down to one lane, with temporary traffic lights in operation.

The National Grid spokeswoman added that engineers will be in Uppermill this week doing preliminary work.

For more information about the work in general, see a statement issued by National Grid last month here. For details of all roadworks currently taking place in the borough of Oldham, visit the roadworks page on the council’s website here.
