Improvements For Churchill Playing Fields Are Underway

Churchill Fields

Major works have started this week which will improve drainage at Churchill playing fields.

The work is set to be completed by October and will make the field between Greenfield and Uppermill more resilient to harsh weather conditions and more convenient for the community.

The playing fields have a history of problems, which have prevented local clubs and residents using them. Problems have included ineffective drainage and uneven pitches.

The changes will include excavation and installation of main drains, a bigger car park and pitch levelling.

It is believed it will cost approximately £410,000 and is being funded by the District Partnership, Football Foundation and Rugby Football League.

Local sports teams Uppermill FC, Saddleworth Rangers, 3D Dynamo’s and Diggle FC have contributed £16,000 to the development.

Councillor Barbara Beeley, Chair of the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership, said “It is fantastic that we have managed to raise nearly half a million pounds of investment for such an important resource and leisure site for the Saddleworth and Lees community”

She added “While some disruption to the use of the playing fields and the surrounding roads is inevitable, every effort will be made to reduce this and residents will be kept up to date with the latest developments.”

It seems strange, given that this story probably provoked more debate, articles, comments and letters, than any other, in the history of Saddleworth News, that this article doesn’t make any reference to the previous coverage, or the controversy surrounding the decision to complete these works.

Simon every one knows that it will not work. It is a very bad work by Councillorr Beesley who has not told anything about this programme only at 1 meeting. She has lied will not come out and tell the truth, these fields have been done years ago and they were told unless they bring the field up to well over the height of the river it will be a waste of money and she new this but was stubborn and carried on with the programme. She should be kicked of the council, has she spoke since it was started no I have not seen anything. I suggest she resigns from the council and stays at home doing the washing up that what she can perhaps do correctly.
