Saddleworth Festival Of The Arts Begins

It’s the opening weekend of the Saddleworth Festival of the Arts, nine days of concerts, shows, talks and other cultural attractions, which only comes around once every four years.

There’s an interview with the Festival Chairman, Jim Scott, in the latest edition of Saddleworth News TV, which you can see by clicking on the box above.

Among the early highlights will be the performance by soprano Katherine Broderick, who is originally from Delph, at Uppermill Civic Hall tonight. She’ll be appearing with the Orchestra of the Swan, conducted by David Curtis, at 7:30pm.

In Delph itself, at the Millgate Centre, the Saddleworth Players will be putting on the last in their run of performances of the Dylan Thomas play Under Milk Wood at 7:30pm. Pictures from that can be seen in a Saddleworth News article here.

Meanwhile, the Dobcross Youth Band is staging a concert of music from films, also beginning at 7:30pm, and you can read more about that here.

On Sunday morning at 11am at St Chad’s Church in Uppermill, there’ll be a special service honouring both the festival and the new Chairman of Saddleworth Parish Council, Cllr Bill Cullen.

Later in the day, there’ll be an opportunity to sing hymns old and new in a Songs of Praise-style concert at Uppermill Methodist Church, beginning at 5:45pm. And in the evening, comedy legend Barry Cryer brings his latest show, Butterfly Brain, to the Civic Hall, with a 7:30pm start.

Also this weekend, eleven private gardens in Dobcross and Diggle will be opened to the public between 11am and 5pm, so let’s hope for a fine couple of days!

Full details of the festival programme for the full nine days, as well as how to get tickets, are available from the festival’s website here.

Past Saddleworth News articles looking ahead to the festival can still be read here.
