Uppermill On The Up As Cake Shop Opens

The owners of the new cake shop in Uppermill have said the village is a “perfect location” for their business. A Spoonfull of Sugar, which is opposite the Post Office, is the third new shop to open on the High Street in just a few weeks.

Friends Hannah Jones from Audenshaw and Beth Blackmore from Huddersfield started their business making cupcakes 18 months ago. As it began to take over more of their free time, they gave up their full-time jobs last October and began looking for premises for a shop.

Hannah said they “couldn’t get a better location” than the centre of Uppermill, adding they’d always dreamed of owning a business there. They opened on Sunday, offering coffees, teas and soft drinks as well as cakes, which they sell individually, in boxes of four or six, or in bulk for special occasions like weddings.

One wedding they recently catered for was Beth’s own. She wed two weeks before the shop opened, and enjoyed just a two-day honeymoon before getting back to work preparing the shop.

Hannah added that local people have already been very welcoming: “People don’t want another opticians or solicitors. Hopefully we can help bring the tourists in to help everyone.”

A Spoonfull of Sugar is the third business to open on the High Street recently. Next door there’s a new sweet shop, and down the road opposite the museum is the second branch of Marsden-based coffee, ice cream and art shop A Month of Sundaes.

And it seems that more businesses are keen to set up in the village. Beth said they contacted their new landlord on the same day as the premises became available, and he told them he’d already had “loads” of interest.

If you’re on Facebook, you can get more information at the A Spoonfull of Sugar page here. Or you can pop into the shop, which is open between 10:30am and 5:30pm every day except Mondays.

Spoonfull of Sugar provided cupcakes for my Wedding on Saturday (19/06)as my choice of alternative to a wedding cake.
The cakes were absolutely stunning, exactly how I had asked them to be. They matched my day perfectly and my guests all commented on them too.
When speaking to my guests in the few days after the wedding, one of the main comments I got about the day were that the cupcakes looked and tasted beautiful.
Thankyou girls, I really would (and already have) reccomended you to people.

My friend brought me a box of 12 assorted cupcakes for my birthday and they were absolutely amazing! Very clever designs that were packaged up beautifully.

I’ve been telling everyone about them!

Good luck girls, I think you’re onto a winner!
